Glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK3Beta) is a proline-directed serine-threonine kinase that was initially identified as a phosphorylating and inactivating glycogen synthase. Two isoforms, alpha (GSK3A; MIM 606784) and beta, show a high degree of amino acid homology (Stambolic and Woodgett, 1994 [PubMed 7980435]). GSK3B is involved in energy metabolism, neuronal cell development, and body pattern formation. Participates in the Wnt signaling pathway. Implicated in the hormonal control of several regulatory proteins including glycogen synthase, MYB and the transcription factor JUN. Phosphorylates JUN at sites proximal to its DNA-binding domain, thereby reducing its affinity for DNA. Expressed in testis, thymus, prostate and ovary and weakly expressed in lung, brain and kidney. Belongs to the Ser/Thr protein kinase family. |
